Welcome to Dapple Horse Hill

About Us

Southern Illinois Horse Country

Dapple Horse Hill is just a small horse farm on the skirts of the Shawnee National Forest.  We love our animals as much as we do the outdoors and wanted to create the opportunity to share our passion for both with others.

Seats or Saddles

Meet the Crew

The Saddle Club

So on the hill everyone gets grouped or nicknamed.... Here's the breakdown.  Saddle club consists of the saddle horses.  We like our saddle horses with a little pep in their step.  Nothing but gaited horses here.  Lets be honest some gait better than others.

Meet the Saddle Club

The Big Boys

The big boys are just that... Major and Roary are a pair of Dapple Gray Percheron geldings that occupy some real estate.  These guys are anchors to the driving division.

Meet The Big Boys

The Pack

No horse farm is complete without man's best friend.  The hill has two permanent residents, Carlie and Tippy (aka: The Tipster)

More Ferociousness

Just a Day on the hill

The Saddle Club

Dancer

Dancer is the only mare on the grounds, well excluding the "Head Boss Mare" Sally. You will see her around the farm, she really runs the show. Dancer is the oldest horse at 24, this Tennessee Walker will show you age is just a number, ole girl still leads the herd.

Paso Fino Horse - Cujo

Cujo

Zach is his given name but this Paso is full of energy, and given the rider can take on a bit of a personality change, earning him the nickname Cujo.  At 12 years old, he is comfortable with a walk through the forest or if you're up to it a fast gait that wont wear out before you do.

Tennesse Walker - Big Daddy

Big Daddy

Rio is an 9 year old Walker, he started off with us as the horse that would rather hang in the barn to be groomed and eat than hit the trail.  However with a little work Rio has transformed into quite the exquisite gaiting machine and earning him the nickname Big Daddy.

New additions

Cimarron

Cimarron - He is a 17 year old Paso that wins smallest horse on the hill hands down. He made his journey to Southern Illinois in December of 2017.  Chi Chi, as he was referred to by his previous owner, has earned the nickname Pony.  He does not leave the sight of the draft horses, and when a 14h Paso stands amongst a team of draft horses rest assured he looks like a pony.

The Big Boys

Major and Roary

These geldings are truly something unique.  They are 9 year old Percherons that came by way of Canada.  These guys spent their younger years in Thunder Bay pulling sleigh rides through Centennial Park.  Although the snow fall in Southern Illinois is not quite what it is in Canada, they don't seem to mind.

Roary

Roary is the little guy of the team, he is 17.2 hands and just under a ton. He is easily identified by his darker hind markings. He is a little more standoffish but is always excited to get to pull.

Major

Major is the big one of team at 17.3 hands and tipping the scales at over a ton.  He has a whiter face and lighter dapples that make him stand out in the pasture, if at over a ton he needs any other reason to stand out.

The Pack

Carlie and Tippy

These two are about as inseparable as they come.  Chasing the wildlife or snoozing at the back door.  You wont find one without the other far behind.

The Tipster

Tippy is the guest that just couldn't get enough of the farm.  He has been visiting for so long now he is part of the family.  We would tell you his breed if only it was able to be determined.  We aren't even sure he is all dog....

Carlie

Carlie, the yellow lab, is a water loving fetching machine... she loves to fetch anything even if it is just a rock.
